Dame Evelyn Glennie has taken up her new post as King’s Cross Musician in Residence for 2017.
At the opening event, which took place at the PRS Foundation offices in London last night (17 January), Dame Evelyn spoke to local residents, businesses, arts and creative industry leaders and music creators about her King’s Cross project.
Titled King’s Cross Sounds, the residency will see her working with the local community to help discover their past, present and imagined future sound of the area.
These sounds will be gathered in a standalone webpage and will serve as inspiration for a final composition and performance at the end of the residency.
The initiative is a partnership between the PRS Foundation and King's Cross, London's new creative quarter.
It was established to enable a UK-based music creator to explore, write and perform new music while based at the site over 12 months.
Dame Evelyn is a world renowned Scottish virtuoso percussionist, recently recognised as a Companion of Honour in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
She was selected to be the new King’s Cross Musician in Residence by the workers, residents, and students of the area, through an online vote in 2016.
She said: ‘I am hugely honoured and humbled to be chosen as musician in residence by the local King’s Cross community.
‘Listening will be the core of my residency and I plan to get into the heart, beat and pulse of the people and the landscape thus, to embark on this journey collaborating with broad-minded people whose aim is to make a difference is immensely exciting. Together we will help build a legacy that can be shared by all curious about King’s Cross.’
The residency will run throughout 2017, with a final piece to be performed later this year.
