Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics has been voted as the song with the most misquoted lyrics in a new study by Spotify.

According to the research, which listed the top 10 ‘sing-a-wrong’ songs, Sweet Dreams was top with the lyric ‘sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to disagree’.

The streaming and subscription service asked users to submit the songs they most commonly hear being misquoted.

Other songs to feature include Rihanna’s We Found Love (We found dove in a soapless place/We found love in a hopeless place) and Aerosmith’s Dude Looks Like A Lady (Do it like a lady/Dude looks like a lady).

Will Hope, director of Label Relations at Spotify, said: ‘British music lovers have named a mix of classic and current tracks as the top songs we most often misquote.

‘The top ten covers everything from Rihanna to Bon Jovi, so it looks like all sorts of different music fans are making funny mistakes.’

The study reveals that the most annoying situation for a lyric misquote is at a gig (28 per cent), followed by in an office (19 per cent) and on public transport (13 per cent).

  5. Peggy, Peggy Suuuuue / Beggin’, beggin youuuu (Madcon, Beggin’ ) - seven percent

  6. Every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you / Every time you go away, you take a piece of me with you (Paul Young, Every Time You Go Away) - three percent

  7. Hold me close now Tony Danza / Hold me closer tiny dancer (Elton John, Tiny Dancer) - three percent
