Colin Matthews, Elizabeth Winters and Toby Young are among the composers to contribute to an album celebrating the work of late composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik.
The project was masterminded by London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) Live to air new works crafted by composers who have taken part in the Panufnik Composers Scheme over the last decade.
The pieces on the forthcoming The Panufnik Legacies II album were recorded by the orchestra at LSO St Luke’s under the baton of conductor François-Xavier Roth.
Scheme alumni also included on the set include Max de Wardener, Evis Sammoutis, Christopher Mayo, Larry Goves, Raymond Yiu, Anjula Semmens and Edmund Finnis, bookended by an opening and conclusion by Matthews.
Also featured on this release are works by Kim B Ashton, Leo Chadburn, Bushra El-Turk, Matthew Kaner, James Moriarty, Elizabeth Ogonek, Aaron Parker, Alastair Putt and Duncan Ward.
Matthews said: ‘A real relationship develops, which continues beyond the scheme itself, so that we feel that a ‘Panufnik family’ has been established…. What is remarkable to me is the unity that has emerged from this project: a tribute both to the inspiration provided by Andrzej Panufnik, and to the faith that the LSO has shown in the Panufnik Scheme.’
Every year since 2005 the initiative has offered six emerging composers the opportunity to write a three minute piece for the LSO. It is run in association with Lady Panufnik in memory of her late husband.
In our recent Picture This feature for M magazine, Lady Panufnik remembers Leopold Stokowski, the world-class conductor and pioneering producer, who befriended her husband: http://www.m-magazine.co.uk/features/picture-this-leopold-stokowski/
