Singer songwriter Ed Sheeran has achieved the longest running number one album since Adele’s 21, new data shows.
According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), Ed’s second album X is currently spending its fifth consecutive week at the top of the charts after selling 400,000 copies in the UK to-date.
Holding the top spot for another week means the record has spent the longest consecutive period at number one since Adele’s 21 in January 2011.
X is also the longest consecutive chart-topping run for a British male solo act since James Blunt’s Back To Bedlam. The fellow solo artist’s album topped the chart for eight consecutive weeks in summer 2005.
Adele’s record-breaking album 21 spent 11 consecutive weeks at the top of the charts. The LP returned to number one several times to earn it a total of 23 weeks.
Elsewhere in the singles chart, Cheryl Cole has scored her fourth number one with Crazy Stupid Love. The song is the lead single from the singer’s forthcoming fourth studio album Only Human.
Her previous chart topping hits include Fight For This Love (2009), Promise This (2010) and Call My Name (2012).
