David Cameron praises ‘world-leading’ UK music

Prime Minister David Cameron has praised the success of Adele and One Direction as British music acts continue to dominate global album sales.

Prime Minister David Cameron has praised the success of Adele and One Direction as British music acts continue to dominate global album sales.  

Speaking at yesterday's BPI 40th anniversary event, Cameron said: ‘We should be extremely proud of how our world-leading music industry continues to go from strength to strength, with a record share of the global market and with British acts having the world’s top selling album for five of the last six years.


'British music is enjoyed across the world and we will keep backing our creative industries that support jobs, create opportunities and contribute to the economy.’

Big selling albums by the likes of Adele, Ed Sheeran, One Direction and Emeli Sande have all helped UK artists’ share of global album sales rise to 13.3 percent in 2012, according to BPI figures.

The statistic is an increase on the 12.6 percent share held in 2011 while five of the top ten biggest global sellers in 2012 were by British artists.

Adele’s 21 was the second biggest selling record in the world with 26m sales now to date.

In the UK, home-grown acts continue to do well, taking a 51.9 percent share of album sales in 2012.
