David Bowie’s Blackstar has taken an early lead in the album charts following the recent news of his death.

According to Official Charts Company (OCC) data, the record, which is the late star’s 25th, has combined sales so far of 43,000 - 25,000 ahead of his closest competitor.

The news comes in the wake of the sudden announcement of the iconic pop star’s death yesterday (11 January) after an 18 month battle with cancer.

Tributes have come in from across the music industry. Geoff Taylor, chief executive BPI and BRIT Awards, said: ‘David Bowie is one of our greatest ever songwriters and performers, as well as an acclaimed producer, actor, writer and fashion icon, who shaped our popular culture like no other artist.

‘David was a true visionary and ground-breaking pioneer who consistently pushed back the frontiers of creativity. His iconic body of work inspired generations of musicians and countless legions fans, and its enduring appeal will influence the music that we enjoy for decades to come.’

Guy Fletcher, PRS chairman said: ‘David Bowie has enriched our popular music culture for fifty years or more. His unique talents as both a song writer and performer will ensure his permanent place among the giants of pop history. The creative community who he inspired throughout his life will miss him greatly. He will never be forgotten.’

The BPI also released figures detailing his astonishing chart performance over the years. To date, he has sold 150m albums worldwide, including nine UK number one LPs. His UK number one singles include Under Pressure (with Queen), Dancing In The Streets (with Mick Jagger), Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes and Let’s Dance.

Other accolades including winning BRIT awards for Best British Male in 1984 and 2014 and receiving the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 1996.
