David Bowie’s Blackstar is the biggest selling vinyl album of 2016 so far, new statistics from the Official Charts Company (OCC) have revealed.

The LP, released in January, has sold nearly twice as many copies as the top seller vinyl seller for all of 2015 - Adele's 25.

The BPI, using the OCC figures, reports that so far in 2016, LP sales are up 60 percent compared to the first three months of last year, at just under 640,000. The continued growth means vinyl sales are likely to top 3m by the end of the year, compared to 2.1m at the end of 2015

Geoff Taylor, BPI and BRIT Awards chief executive, said: ‘Vinyl is no longer the preserve of baby-boomers who grew up with the format. It now also appeals to a new generation of engaged younger fans and millennials.

‘While digital platforms provide fans instant and unlimited access to an ever-expanding cosmos of music, they can’t quite match the unique experience vinyl gives you: browsing for rare gems in your favourite record store, poring over the cover art and sleeve notes and enjoying the ritual of carefully dropping the stylus onto an LP and savouring its analogue sound. Younger fans increasingly discover on digital but collect on vinyl.’
