A campaign to erect a statue of the late David Bowie at the site of where he first performed as Ziggy Stardust has reached its £100,000 target.

More than 700 people have pledged their supported to the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign with almost £115,000 raised at the time of writing.

The statue will be put up in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, where Bowie unveiled his Ziggy Stardust character and Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust albums in the early seventies.

Campaigner David Stopps told the BBC: ‘We are very grateful to everybody. It's been a biblical 40 days. The bottom line now is that the statue will happen.’

Adele's record company and 80s musician, Howard Jones were among six donators giving £6,000, the news provider reported.

The statue will be built by sculptor Andrew Sinclair, who has also made artworks of the Queen.

According to the Kickstarter page, ‘the statue will have Bowie as Ziggy as the main figure, but behind that figure will be sculpted references to many of the other characters and looks that he created during his career. The statue will be in coloured bronze and a beautiful bound and boxed book will be published about the making of the statue’.
