The late great David Bowie has topped the official singles and album charts for Record Store Day (RSD) 2016.

The event, which reached its ninth year in 2016, saw tens of thousands of vinyl enthusiasts turn out to support their local record retailer when it took place on Saturday 16 April.

Over 230 independent shops participated with live performances and special events.

Of the 500 limited edition releases available, David Bowie topped both the RSD singles and album chart with his seven inch picture disc TVC 15 and The Man Who Sold the World LP with the original German cover artwork on the disc.

Other top sellers included limited releases from Motorhead, Iron Maiden, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Manic Street Preachers.

Kim Bayley, Entertainment Retailers Association CEO, said: ‘Record Store Day has played such a positive role in stemming the tide of closures of independent record shops which seemed inevitable in the days before the launch of the event. Record Store Day continues to encourage new entrants to the market with a further 17 independent record shops having opened in UK in the past 12 months.

‘But above all, it’s fantastic to see Record Store Day celebrated with the hundreds of parties, performances and one-off events across the UK, with both customers old and new. Here’s to our tenth anniversary next year!’
