She will receive the accolade from Sweden’s King Carl XVI at a ceremony in Stockholm on 9 June.

Dame Evelyn, who has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12, has released more than 30 solo albums over a career spanning four decades.

During that time she’s won numerous awards including three Grammys, and has played with the world's most prestigious orchestras.

Iconic folk and Americana songwriter Emmylou Harris, who first made her name alongside Gram Parsons, will also receive a Laureate at the ceremony.

Previous winners of the Polar Music Prize include Sir Paul McCartney, Chuck Berry, Patti Smith and Youssou N'Dour.
