Music curation is an essential way for music fans to discover new artists online, a panel at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) said.
Mixmag’s editor Nick DeCosemo made the comments as part of a session discussing the role of music journalism in 2014.
He said: ‘In an age where everything is accessible instantly, you need some sort of curation, some sort of guide. Our Soundcloud has a huge following because of this. You want to be guided to the good stuff. As Mixmag we’re the gatekeepers of dance music culture.’
Moderator Joe Muggs said that although print circulation for music magazines is dropping, critics and publications become important in cutting through the ‘digital smog’ and pointing listeners to new sounds.
Zel McCarthy said that as an online journalist, you have a short time to attract attention with your content.
‘Now in a digital age you need to hit them in that split second where they see your piece of music or content among all the digital noise,’ he said.
In a previous panel, Publishing – What Is Music Really Worth? Spotify economist Will Page was keen to underline the role of curation in the form of playlists playing a key role in the discovery of new music.
He said: ‘The role of playlists is paramount in the whole streaming process. Clean Bandit traveled across the world through playlists rather than conventional media support.’
