‘Copyright infringement is theft, pure and simple’, UK culture secretary Sajid Javid has said.

The new minister was speaking during a music industry address at the BPI AGM.

Sajid praised the achievements of the UK music industry, quoting BPI figures showing that one in every eight albums sold anywhere in the world are by a British artist.

At the same time, he said that more needs to be done by the industry as a whole to tackle challenges surrounding online piracy.

‘No industry - and no government - can let this level of infringement continue on such a massive, industrial scale,’ Sajid explained.

‘I know some people say the intellectual property genie is out of the bottle and that no amount of wishing will force it back in. Copyright infringement is theft, pure and simple.And it’s vital we try to reduce it.

He continued: ‘That is why we’re working with the entertainment industry - and the technology industry - to deliver a robust, fair and effective enforcement regime.’

According to Ofcom figures quoted during the speech, in just one quarter of last year almost 200m music tracks were consumed illegally.
