Composers Daniel Kidane, Heather Leigh and Ailis Ni Riain are among the eight recipients of this year’s Paul Hamlyn Foundation Awards for Artists.
The annual prize, now in its 22nd year, is one of the largest monetary awards made to individual artists and composers in the UK, with each individual receiving £50,000 at a pivotal moment in their career.
South London composer Kidane focuses on themes of multi-cultural exchanges and how these shape our daily interactions. He has new orchestral work premiered early next year.
US-born Leigh is a virtuoso of pedal steel guitar and is now based in Glasgow. She is touring throughout the winter, with UK dates this month.
Yorkshire based Riain is a contemporary classical composer and stage writer. The hearing-impaired talent also creates installations and music-theatre, and is committed to finding new audiences for new spaces.
Jane Hamlyn, chair of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, announced the recipients at a reception held at the foundation’s London offices.
She said: ‘I am delighted to announce the recipients of Awards for Artists 2016, who represent an exceptional cohort. The artistic talent represented by this year’s recipients is particularly wide-ranging and reflects the diversity of practice amongst artists in the UK.’
Since their inception the awards have benefited over 140 visual artists and composers.
Previous recipients include Sally Beamish (1994), Simon Holt (1994), Tansy Davies (2009), Anna Meredith (2010), Eliza Carthy (2012), Shabaka Hutchings (2014) and Brian Irvine (2015).
