European Capital of Culture, Aarhus 2017 and three composer associations Danish Jazz, Beat and Folk Authors (DJBFA), the Danish Composer’s Association (DKF) and Danish Popular Authors (DPA) have launched a competition to find the sound of Aarhus 2017.

Composers from all genres are invited to propose a musical work to soundtrack the forthcoming capital of culture.

The winner can expect to hear their work at the official 2017 opening of Aarhus and featured in events throughout the year. They will also receive 200,000 DKK (£21,300) in prize money.

Director Gitte Just said: ‘I am happy we can now present an international call for ideas for the sound of Aarhus 2017.

‘We hope to receive ideas for a piece that can mark the capital of culture year across the region, all over Denmark in an unusual and memorable way. We also hope the piece can become a reminder of experiences and memories of Aarhus 2017, leaving behind a legacy beyond the year itself.’

Mary Miller, general and artistic director for Bergen Nasjonale Opera, Georg Weckwerth, sound artist and curator and singer David Moss are among the judging panel.

The deadline for proposals is 1 December 2014 with the winner expected to be unveiled the following June.
