Club to Catwalk, a new exhibition exploring the eighties club fashions sported by the likes of Adam Ant and Boy George, is to open at London’s V&A.

Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s, which runs from today (10 July) until 16 February 2014, will explore the creative explosion of London fashion from the period.

The impact of the clothes worn by the likes of Boy George and Adam Ant went far beyond the club scene of the UK capital and helped create and influence youth culture during the 1980s.

More than 85 outfits designed by the likes of John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Katharine Hamnett will be on display. Much of the clothing was worn by fans of Fetish, Goth and the New Romantics.

A small club-like area will be created within the space to show film footage of clubs from the time such as Taboo, Heaven and Steve Strange’s Blitz.

Clothing from Michiko Koshino’s first store in Covent Garden, which featured DJs, will be another highlight. She started her Motorking clothing line back in 1987 which was worn by David Bowie and Moby.

The exhibition is curated by V&A head of fashion, Claire Wilcox with Wendy Dagworthy as expert consultant.

It follows the David Bowie is exhibition, which became the fastest selling event in the V&A’s history earlier in the year.
