Charlotte Church has criticised the music industry for coercing young female stars into using sex to sell their music.

The 27 year-old singer songwriter made the comments during BBC6 Music's annual John Peel Lecture in Salford last night (14 October).

In her lecture, Charlotte described the music business as ‘a male dominated industry with a juvenile perspective on gender and sexuality’.

She said that the industry increasingly wants its female stars to appear as ‘sex-objects that appear child-like’.

‘The women generally filling these roles are very young, often previous child stars or Disney-tweens, who are simply interested in getting along in an industry glamourised to be the most desirable career for young women,’ Charlotte added.

The star criticised the likes of Rihanna, Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus who appears naked in the video to her number one single Wrecking Ball.

Charlotte called on websites to put age restrictions on certain pop videos and for radio bosses to consider dropping songs by artists who are too risqué.
