Japp first joined the publisher in 1977 as managing director of of subsidiary The First Composers Company, before becoming director in 1981.

Following a stint at Warner/Chappell in the mid-eighties he was named Carlin Music’s chief executive in 1989, and was responsible for running both UK and European operations.

Speaking to Music Business Worldwide, Japp said: ‘I intend to continue to work as a music publisher, either in my own right or as a consultant for other publishers, and to fulfil a long held ambition of getting back into movie production – which is where I started out after leaving school?.’

Over the years, Carlin’s roster has key songwriters such as Aretha Franklin, Joan Baez and Ray Davies, but the publisher is best known for looking after the songs of Elvis Presley, including numerous number one hits.
