Britten Sinfonia has announced the ten shortlisted composers for the annual OPUS2016 competition.
The shortlist, chosen anonymously, have now been invited to write new pieces for a piano trio to be explored in workshops in January 2015, with guidance and feedback from Julian Philips, Hannah Kendall and OPUS2015 winning composer, Edward Nesbit.
Shortlisted composers also have the opportunity to spend a day working closely with a Britten Sinfonia musician to focus in depth on a specific instrument. The winner of OPUS2016, who will complete a full commission for Britten Sinfonia.
Jen House, director of Creative Learning at Britten Sinfonia, said: ‘Working in detail with Britten Sinfonia’s outstanding musicians provides crucial and wide ranging development opportunities for composers from specific musical interpretation to honing communication skills with performers, and exploring how initial sketches and ideas can be developed.’

- Robert Peate, 28, PhD student at the Royal Academy of Music and freelance composer/piano teacher, Abergavenny
- Andrew Baldwin, 28, freelance composer, London
- Daniel Kidane, 28, doctoral student at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London
- James Hoyle, 22, student at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London
- Emma Wilde, 24, student at the University of Manchester, Manchester
- Margaret Haley, 61, composer/music educator, Wakefield
