Ella Eyre, Sam Smith and Chloe Howl are the shortlisted artists for the BRITs Critic Choice awards 2014.

The prize is set up to help predict the musical stars of the next 12 months with previous winners including Adele, Florence + The Machine and Emeli Sande.

Collectively, these artists have gone on to sell more than 13m albums worldwide. The nominated acts are picked by a team of industry experts including music editors and journalists, bloggers and DJs.

Sam Smith, who is known for his collaborations with Disclosure as well as his own solo material, said: ‘I have watched the BRITs religiously for many years growing up ... so to even be up for this award is completely overwhelming for me.’

Artists are eligible for consideration if they are signed to a record label and are set to release their debut album in 2014.

The winner of this year’s prize will be announced on 12 December with the BRIT Awards itself set to take place in February of next year.
