UK artist albums accounted for almost one in eight of all albums sold in the US last year with Sam Smith, One Direction and Ed Sheeran leading the Brit success, new figures show.
Data from Nielsen Music and analysis from the BPI revealed that UK acts accounted for 12.2 percent of all artist albums sold in the US during last year, up from ten percent recorded in 2013.
Sam Smith topped the list of best-selling British artist albums in the US with In The Lonely Hour, ending the year as the third best-selling album. Meanwhile, One Direction were ninth in the list of overall best-selling albums in the US in 2014.
Further BPI analysis claimed that these sales achievements were even more impressive as the top ten best-sellers list for 2013 did not feature any Brits.
Geoff Taylor, BPI and BRIT Awards chief executive, said: ‘British artists well and truly flew the flag in the world's biggest and most competitive music market last year.
‘The sensational achievements of Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, One Direction and the entire class of 2014 demonstrate once again that the UK's music industry is a world-beater.’
The statistics revealed that Sam Smith's Stay With Me was the most-streamed track by a UK artist in the US, being played more than 147m times in 2014.
Elsewhere, One Direction were the most streamed UK act overall, with more than 533m plays across 27 hits on the different digital services.
