The supergroup - dubbed Artful Badger and Friends - released the song yesterday in opposition to government plans to kill 100,000 badgers it believes are responsible for spreading bovine tuberculosis around the nation’s dairy farms.

The song was penned by music producer Rob Cass (Robbie Williams, Estelle) and features contributions from Southend rapper Sonny Green and Sam and the Womp, whose debut single topped the charts last year.

Cass said: ‘To me all nature is beautiful. This track is my humble contribution to stopping the needless slaughter of badgers. We decided the best way we could help was to do what we do best: make music.’

Queen guitarist May is already well known for his pro-badger stance having been an active animal rights campaigner for many years. Last month he released another song, entitled Badger Rap, to raise awareness of the animals’ plight. The track features English eccentric Brian Blessed and animator Weebl.

Last weekend, the government began a pilot cull of badgers in the Gloucestershire and Somerset countryside, with more expected to take place around the country over the coming weeks. For more information visit the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs badger control webpage.
