BPI has secured £4m worth of funding from the Big Lottery Fund to launch its Big Music Project.

The BPI is establishing the initiative in collaboration with Global Radio and children’s charity UK Youth to offer thousands of young people training and development opportunities across the UK.

Initiatives will include four national themed events, a nationwide UK music competition and a new programme of careers events aimed at offering 250 placements to young people looking to break into the music industry.

Geoff Taylor, BPI and BRIT Awards chief executive, said: ‘We've seen first-hand how music is a force for good that can change lives.  And so we're excited that this ambitious initiative will create opportunities for young people right around the country to get involved in playing or working in music.

With our partners across the music industry, we'll offer internships in music companies, work experience at the BRIT Awards, and music mentoring to a new generation of young people who never believed they might get the chance to work in such an exciting business.’

Jo Dipple, chief executive of UK Music, added: ‘I am delighted that UK Music is a partner in The Big Music Project which aims to reach millions of young people and teach skills development through music.

‘UK Music’s existing network of 14 rehearsal rooms reaches thousands of underprivileged kids all over the country. This new project is an opportunity to help give our ambition serious scale and resources.’

BPI recently announced the launch of its Music Export Growth Scheme in collaboration with UK Trade and Investment.
