The BPI will host an Innovation Hub Mixer aimed at record labels looking to utilise new technology in their businesses.

Taking place on 7 March at Runaway East Shoreditch, London, the event will invite innovative tech companies to meet music industry representatives.

It follows the first mixer held at BPI’s offices in November 2016. Tech start-ups so far potentially benefitting include Exclusiph, Doo Wap, Gig Rev, Duel and Chew.TV, while SupaPass - the fair trade streaming app - is now working with label attendees Regent Street Records and Gold Bar Records.

Joao Afonso, Exclusiph chief executive officer and co-founder, an online service for high quality and official music images, said: ‘We’re currently in discussions to provide our service to the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize as well as to fellow tech company Doo Wap, while things are also moving forward with BMG and [PIAS].  Although we were already talking with them, presenting and networking with them at the BPI Innovation Hub strengthened that relationship.’

The Innovation Hub has attracted the interest of a broad range of tech companies and labels, including the majors, but organisers are keen to ensure that the independent community is also served.

Heading up the initiative for the BPI is Innovation Hub director, Vanessa Higgins, who serves on the BPI’s Council as an independent label representative.

Vanessa said: ‘The reaction to our first mixer event has been fantastic, and we’re seeing a growing appetite from tech companies and labels of all sizes to get involved, which demonstrates the need for this initiative. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport have also expressed an interest, as they are keen to encourage activity that brings culture and digital together.

‘For this coming mixer I wanted to take the music community in to the heart of the tech world, so I am delighted by the prospect of staging the event at Runway East Shoreditch, and look forward to delivering further success stories for music and technology.’
