Tyler will perform the song Believe in Me, which was written by Desmond Child, Lauren Christy and Christopher Braide, and produced by David Huff.

She said: ‘I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision, and especially with such a fabulous song. I promise to give this everything that I've got for the UK.’

Welsh-born Tyler has enjoyed a career spanning four decades. Her breakthrough came in 1977 with second single Lost in France, which reached number nine in the UK singles chart.

The eighties brought even greater success with international best-selling album Faster Than the Speed of Light – a collaboration with Jim Steinman - and multi-platinum selling power ballad Total Eclipse Of The Heart.

Her single Holding Out for a Hero, from the soundtrack to the film Footloose, secured her reputation as a power ballad queen. Tyler’s new album Rocks and Honey will be released on 6 May.

In related news, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has written Armenia’s entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The song, Lonely Planet, has been dubbed a rock ballad and will be performed by Armenian act Dorians.

The 58th Eurovision Song Contest takes place on 18 May in Malmö, Sweden, and will be broadcast live on BBC One with commentary by Graham Norton.
