Billy Bragg, British political singer and songwriter, will receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at this year’s Association of Independent Music (AIM) awards.

The musician is well known for songs such as Don’t Try This At Home, Sexuality and New England as much as his campaigning for a range of organisations including the Featured Artist Coalition.

According to organisers, 2013 marks 30 years since his debut mini-album Life’s a Riot entered the top 30.

Billy said: 'I was inspired by punk rock, not just by the music but by the DIY ethos that drove the scene.

‘Over the years I've held onto that spirit by working with labels whose commitment to independence has offered me greater control of my output. Therefore, to be recognised by AIM as an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to music is a great honour.'

The singer songwriter's latest album Tooth and Nail was released on Cooking Vinyl earlier this year and was Billy's 12th studio release.

Geoff Travis, founder of Rough Trade, has also been named as a recipient of the Pioneer Award at this year’s AIM awards.

Both him and Billy will be presented with their prizes at a ceremony at The Brewery in Clerkenwell on 3 September.
