Punks, rockers, rastas and ravers are among the musical mavericks being celebrated in the British Film Institute’s (BFI) new free-to-access movie archive.
The Other Grooves strand, which sits on the BFI’s video-on-demand channel, offers a rare selection of over 100 newly digitised archive films and TV programmes.
Its aim is to offer extensive insight into previous generations’ counter-culture identities, from mods, skinheads, rude boys and punks to pagans, rockers, rastas and ravers.
The BFI has sourced documentaries, shorts, dramas and feature-length films from its own collection plus regional and national archives across the UK.
Highlights include an unedited 1963 version of Beatlemania, plus one-off films covering historic musical movements such as rave culture, Ulster’s new wave scene and Notting Hill’s reggae uprising of 1970.
All of the films explore 20th century manners and morals, offering viewers an alternate, candid view of British musical history.
