Bert Weedon was born in East Ham, London, in 1920 and learned to play the guitar aged 12.
In a career that included being the first British guitarist to have a UK hit (Guitar Boogie Shuffle in 1959), to working with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Cliff Richard, Ted Heath and Mantovani, perhaps Weedon's greatest achivement was his influence on the following generation of guitarists with his legendary Play In A Day tutorials.
Alongside thousands of other guitarists, Hank Marvin, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Brian May all learned the guitar from Weedon's Play In A Day books.
In 2001, Weedon was awarded an OBE for his services to music. The guitarist died aged 91 at his home in Beaconsfield after a long illness.
