BBC Singers and the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) has opened a Europe-wide call for scores from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) composers.

Both BASCA standard and professional members are urged to submit work for the BBC Singers workshop and concert later this year.

The deadline for entries is 16 July and the maximum duration for eligible works. To learn more about the guidelines and submit your work, please see https://basca.org.uk/2017/06/14/bbc-singers-workshop-concert-two-calls-scores/

The workshop, on 3 October, will take place at the BBC Maida Vale Studios, London, and feature composer Judith Weir and the BBC Singers.

The event offers composers the opportunity to gain experience hearing their work rehearsed by a world-leading choir and receive feedback from Weir, who is master of the Queen’s music.

The concert, which takes place on 6 October, will feature works by BAME composers selected via the open call.

Their scores will be performed by the BBC Singers, conducted by James Morgan and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

BASCA said: ‘In 2016 BASCA and BBC Radio 3 presented a conference on Diversity in Composing and one theme which emerged was the low visibility of BAME composers and the need for more role models.

‘We hope that presenting this concert will provide visibility to these composers and help to inspire a younger generation of composers from all backgrounds.’
