BBC Radio is to celebrate its 70th anniversary with two weeks of live broadcasting from a pop-up studio at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank.

According to the broadcaster, 29 September will mark the anniversary of the BBC’s Third Prgramme, the forerunner of BBC Radio 3.

The pop-up station will form part of two weeks of new commissions and special events at the Southbank.

Radio 3 will take over the Royal Festival Hall public spaces for a fortnight of special broadcasts featuring Southbank Centre artists, ensembles, resident orchestras, visiting musical and literary guests, and more.

Visitors to the venue will be able to see BBC Radio 3 presenters broadcasting live from the pop-up glass studio in the Festival Terrace foyers, beginning with drive-time programme In Tune on Friday 23 September.

Alan Davey, BBC Radio 3 controller, said: ‘The Radio 3 pop up at Southbank Centre will draw from the spirit of the Third Programme in a contemporary way - to get audiences engaged and connected with remarkable music and culture.

‘Presenting fresh, distinctive and varied programming is at the heart of what we do as a cultural institution, and we look forward to broadcasting a host of top-class content celebrating the unique heritage of Radio 3 installed in one of the most exceptional arts centres in the UK.’

BBC Radio 3 Live at Southbank Centre also complements the station’s broadcast partnership with Philharmonia Orchestra’s Stravinsky series Myths And Rituals, which will see Radio 3 broadcasting all five Philharmonia Stravinsky concerts in the In Concert slot from May to September.
