For the fifth year in a row BBC Radio 3 is dedicating its entire schedule to women composers to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), and this year the station has a special focus on women in music leadership.

The day-long feature, called Women in Front, will run throughout the day and BBC Radio 3 presenters will be joined by eight women conductors and music directors from diverse backgrounds and generations.

Featured guests, including 19-year-old prodigy Stephanie Childress and 62-year-old Marin Alsop, will discuss everything from the challenges faced by women coming through the ranks of musical leadership to the changes they have seen during their careers.

Today’s (Friday) programming will feature Women in Front: This is What a Conductor Looks Like, which explores eight women conductors who defy stereotypes, Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Conductor? lead by Alice Farnham, and much more.
