BBC Radio 3 and RPS commission New Generation Artists

BBC Radio 3 and the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) have announced six composers for the broadcaster’s New Generation Artists scheme.

BBC Radio 3 and the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) have announced six composers for the broadcaster’s New Generation Artists scheme.

Jonathan Dove, Matthias Pintscher, John Casken, Sally Beamish, Rolf Wallin and Kurt Schwertsik are the composers each tasked with writing a 10 -minute piece of chamber music for various players.

The collaborations were unveiled at the RPS Awards 2015 with performances of the works to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at some stage over 2015-16.

Rosemary Johnson, executive director of the RPS, said: ‘We are delighted to co-commission witcompoh BBC Radio 3 such a wonderful group of composers to write new works for these talented New Generation Artists, and to announce them at the RPS Music Awards, which celebrate the very best in live classical music.’

BBC Young Musician presenter Clemency Burton-Hill will present a series of broadcasts showcasing these new works and musical talents.

The New Generation Artists initiative was founded in 1999 as part of the BBC’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

Previous alumni include internationally recognised artists such as Benjamin Grosvenor, Alison Balsom, the Belcea Quartet, Christine Rice and Gwilym Simcock.
