BBC Radio 2 Folks Awards winners revealed

The Unthanks, The Young’uns, Sam Lee and Joan Armatrading are among the UK acts to be honoured at the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The Unthanks (above), The Young’uns, Sam Lee and Joan Armatrading are among the UK acts to be honoured at the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The Unthanks received the Best Album Award for their eighth studio record Mount the Air, while Teeside trio The Young’uns took the Best Group accolade for the second year on the trot.

Brighde Chaimbeul, a teenage piper from the Isle of Skye was given the Young Folk Award.

Mercury Prize nominated songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer Sam Lee was acknowledged in the Best Traditional Track category for his reinterpretation of Lovely Molly and both Joan Armatrading and Norma Waterson were given Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The ceremony took place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, last night (27 April) and were presented by Mark Radcliffe and Julie Fowlis.

The evening kicked off with a live performance by the John McCusker Band, followed by several performances by Joan Armatrading, Mark Knopfler, Sam Lee and Dublin folk band Lynched.

Rufus Wainwright also performed a tribute to Sandy Denny, who was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The awards are available to watch on BBC iPlayer and will be broadcast on the BBC Red Button from Saturday 30 April until Thursday 5 May.
