The 2016 BBC Proms season is to pay tribute to David Bowie, celebrate the TV dance contest Strictly Come Dancing and expand from its Royal Albert Hall base to host a show in a South London carpark.
BBC Radio 3’s Katie Derham will presents the first ever Strictly Prom on 21 July with the help of professional dancers from the BBC television series.
Bowie will be honoured with a late night Prom on 29 July featuring Amanda Palmer and Anna Calvi.
The festival will also move from its Royal Albert Hall home for a concert in a Peckham carpark.
The open air show will feature Christopher Stark and the Multi-Storey Orchestra performing works by lauded minimalist composer Steve Reich.
Later in the season, musical giant Quincy Jones will be joined by Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest to celebrate his extraordinary career.
Elsewhere, Jamie Cullum will return to the Proms with the Heritage Orchestra and special guests will include emerging talent from BBC Music Introducing.
The Proms' new director David Pickard said: ‘I am hugely proud to be presenting my first season as director of the BBC Proms. I cannot think of another festival anywhere in the world which offers such an extraordinary range of music performed by the world's leading orchestras, conductors and soloists.
‘The BBC's ongoing support not only allows the Proms to reach millions through broadcasting, it also ensures that those attending concerts can hear the very finest performances at an astonishingly low cost. I look forward to continuing the founding vision of the Proms - to bring the best of classical music to the widest possible audience.’
The 122nd Proms runs from 15 July until 10 September. Please see bbc.co.uk/proms for the full programme of events.
