Sam Smith, David Bowie and Ed Sheeran are among the nominated artists for the BBC’s inaugural Music Awards.

Taking place on 11 December at London’s Earls Court, the event aims to celebrate the best music from the last year.

These shortlisted acts will be up against Jungle, Royal Blood and Elbow for the title of British artist of the year.

Elsewhere, Dolly Parton, Gregory Porter, Lorde, Pharrell, Prince and Taylor Swift are competing for best international artist.

Bob Shennan, director of BBC Music, said: ‘The BBC Music Awards exist to celebrate the past 12 months in music. The shortlists feature an amazing range of hugely talented artists.

‘Each and every one has made a unique mark on the music industry. They have experienced phenomenal success and it's wonderful to see new acts featuring alongside some of the biggest names in the business.’

Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton are hosting the ceremony for an audience of 13,500 people at Earls Court, with BBC One, Radio 1 and Radio 2 all hosting coverage from the event.
