The BBC is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Britpop with a special series of programmes.
From Sunday 6 to Friday 11 April, Britpop at the BBC will highlight the bands and music of the era including shows on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Four. The legendary Evening Session, presented by Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq, will return to Radio 2 for the entire week.
Supergrass frontman, Gaz Coombes and Britpop poster girl Louise Wener from Sleeper will be live in the studio with Jo and Steve while highlights from the Evening Session archive, including Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker co-hosting with Jo Whiley, will feature.
Listeners will also be asked to visit the BBC website to vote for their favourite 6 Music Britpop anthem from Friday 4 to Thursday 10 April.
Steve Lamacq said: ‘For me, this is the week 20 years ago that the musical tectonic plates shifted. On the Tuesday, Oasis played live on Radio 1 for the first time and on the Friday morning we heard the news of Kurt Cobain's death. It was as if one scene had announced it had arrived, as another began to lose its way.
‘Without Kurt, grunge lost its momentum, while Britpop was building by the week. Blur's Girls And Boys was all over the radio ahead of the release of Parklife and Elastica had just had their first hit. But this was the week when you thought 'music's coming home'.’
Miranda Sawyer will present the How Britpop Changed The Media documentary on Sunday 6 April on BBC 6 Music while Stuart Maconie will explore the origins of Britpop in Britpop: A Very British Pop on Monday 7 April on BBC Radio 2.
Visit the Britpop at the BBC website to find out more about programmes, watch exclusive clips and view photos of the bands of the period.
