BBC 6 Music’s audience reached a record 1.96 million in the final quarter of 2013, new RAJAR statistics have revealed.

The figure was up from the 1.89 million seen year-on-year and higher than the 1.73 million listeners who tuned in to the station during the previous quarter.

RAJAR research revealed that the growth came at a time when radio listening is at its highest level since records began back in 1999.

48.38 million people now listen to radio each week with a record 36.22 million choosing BBC stations.

Helen Boaden, director of BBC Radio, said: ‘These figures are wonderful news for the radio industry and Britain’s love affair with radio shows no signs of cooling. We are a nation of audiophiles and so, despite the ever-increasing competition for people’s time and the growing range of online audio providers, radio is thriving in the digital age.

‘I’m delighted that the BBC’s distinctive portfolio of stations is proving so enduringly popular and helping the UK radio industry go from strength to strength.’

BBC Radio 2 also saw growth with its weekly audience growing to a new high of 15.51 million, up from 15.11 million last year and 14.94 million the previous quarter.

BBC Radio’s share of listening remained steady at 55.2 percent. The figure was slightly lower than the 55.3 percent recorded year-on-year but higher than than the 53.4 percent seen in the previous three month period.
