BBC 6 Music is celebrating independent music today (10 Sept), championing independent artists, labels and venues all throughout the day.
Dubbed State of Independents Day, the event is also being used as an opportunity to discuss the challenges the UK’s independent music industry is currently facing as a result of COVID-19.
As well as exploring the pandemic’s impact on independents, Lauren Laverne will be speaking to record shop owners, Mary Anne Hobbs will be discussing club culture and how it will adapt and Steve Lamacq will talk to venue bosses.
The day will include exclusive live recordings and mixes performed by independent artists from their homes and studios. These will be broadcast throughout the day.
BBC Sound of 2020 and AIM Award winner Arlo Parks will also be performing a live session. Speaking to the BBC, Parks explained how recent events have ‘shown that the rug can be pulled from under my feet at any time.’
