Composer and songwriter Simon Darlow has been appointed as the new chairman of the British Academy Of Songwriters, Composers And Authors (BASCA).

Darlow, who is also Deputy Chairman (Writer) on the PRS Board, has taken over from former BASCA chairman Sarah Rodgers.

The composer and songwriter has enjoyed a long and varied career in the music industry. He co-wrote Slave to the Rhythm by Grace Jones, hits for the likes of Shirley Bassey and Cliff Richard as well as numerous compositions for film and ads. He’s also worked as a head chorister at Chichester Cathedral and music scholar at Lancing College.

On his appointment he told CMU: ‘I look forward to helping BASCA adapt to the digital age, welcome new friends, harmonise the voices that strive to protect the value of copyright and continue to celebrate excellence through our prestigious awards The Ivors and the British Composer awards.’

Darlow sits on the boards of many other musical bodies including PRS for Music Foundation and UK Music.

BASCA represents the rights of songwriters from across all genres, and helps celebrate their achievements through events such as the British Composer Awards and the Ivor Novello Awards.
