Band Aid 30’s Do They Know it’s Christmas? has hit the number one spot after selling more than 312,000 units in its first week of release.

Official chart data showed that the release, organised once again by Bob Geldof and featuring contributions from the likes of One Direction, Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora, sold more than the rest of the top five singles combined.

The song scored the biggest first week sales since the X Factor’s James Arthur shifted 489,000 copies of his winner’s single Impossible in 2012.

Band Aid 30’s sales also outshine Band Aid 20’s first-week sales in 2004 - their version of the song sold 297,000 in its first seven days of release.

The group’s achievements means it is the fourth time a version of the song has made it to the top of the singles charts.

Meanwhile in the album charts, boy band One Direction have enjoyed another number one with their latest release, Four.

The album clocked up 142,000 sales during its first week of release. It follows in the footsteps of their latest album, Midnight Memories, the biggest selling album of 2013.
