Music charity Attitude is Everything is to host an In-Sight Weekend to highlight how disabled artists and audiences interact with the DIY music scene.
Developed in collaboration with Constant Flux and DIY Space for London, the weekend long event will take place at the latter venue on 31 March and 1 April.
A series of talks will take place on 31 March with musicians, artists and gig-goers discussing barriers to inclusion, the creative process and their vision for the future.
A workshop will follow on 1 April bringing together artists and gig goers to explore disability awareness; the barriers that might exist for audience members and artists; the practical measures that can be achieved in the context of a DIY venue, gig or tour; and what should be included in a guide for grassroots bands and promotors.
The day will culminate in a showcase gig, demonstrating a wide array of DIY access solutions including captioning and featuring performances by a diverse and innovative range of artists. The line-up consists of Revenge of Calculon, Paul Hawkins and the Awkward Silences, Woolf and The Fish Police.
The learning and stories captured over the In-Sight Weekend will be condensed into a new guide on how to make DIY and grassroots gigs and tours more accessible. This will be published alongside a UK-wide campaign to sign-up bands and artists to implement its recommendations in their practice.
Suzanne Bull MBE, Attitude is Everything chief executive officer, said: ‘Attitude is Everything is proud to be working with Constant Flux and DIY Space For London to deliver a weekend of exciting events to showcase amazing artists and the ways in which DIY and grassroots gigs can be made as accessible as possible for Deaf and disabled people.
‘Funding from PRS Foundation for Music has allowed us to turn our attention to un-tapping the vast potential of grassroots artists to help us in our mission to break down barriers to accessing live music. Our new guide will be shared across the UK and support bands and artists to make their gigs as inclusive as possible and reach new audiences.’
Funded by PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England, the In-Sight Weekend highlights the increased efforts by Attitude is Everything to improve access at smaller music events.
