Jazz composer Gwilym Simcock and Welsh artist Kizzy Crawford have collaborated with Sinfonia Wales and RSPB Wales to celebrate the country’s rare Celtic rainforest.

The work, Birdsong/Cân Yr Adar, was inspired by RSPB Carnafallt, a nature reserve in Wales’ hidden Celtic rainforest territory, near Powys.

It fuses live orchestral performance with soul-folk, classical and jazz, with extra sounds and visuals provided by artist Ruby Fox.

The concert tours Wales from 2 November and culminates with a performance at Hampstead Arts Festival for London Jazz Festival on 14 November.

Crawford said: ‘Writing with Gwilym, whose work I absolutely love, alongside Sinfonia Cymru’s incredibly talented musicians has been a wonderful opportunity to develop my own songwriting and indulge my love of nature.

‘This is a very special collaboration, and my thanks to RSPB Cymru for their expertise and passion for what they do.  We can’t wait to share the performance with audiences.’

Katie-Jo Luxton, RSPB Cymru director, said: ‘We’re delighted to be working with Gwilym, Kizzy and Sinfonia Cymru to capture the special wildlife of RSPB Carngafallt. Misty, atmospheric and rich in nature, the reserve’s oak woods house some of our most treasured species - from red starts and wood warblers to buzzards and peregrines.

‘Nature is alive with beautiful songs and sounds and by bringing these melodies to the stage we can truly celebrate our Celtic roots.’

The collaboration and performances are supported by the Arts Council of Wales.
