American singer songwriter Ariana Grande has become the first artist to top the new UK singles chart based on sales and streaming data.

According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), Ariana’s Problem, featuring Iggy Azalea, is her debut UK number one as well as the first in the chart which now includes streaming data from the likes of Spotify, Deezer and Napster.

Problem enjoyed a combined ‘chart sales’ figure of 113,000 - the OCC explained that this figure equates to 106,000 sales and a streaming contribution of six percent to this week’s historic chart topper based on 712,000 audio streams.

Martin Talbot, chief executive of the OCC, said: ‘Congratulations to Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea for claiming this landmark number one. This is a big week for the Official Singles Chart - and we are delighted that it is such a big week for them too.’

On average, the streaming contribution to this week’s top 40 singles sits at just over 20 percent.

Elsewhere in the chart, Ella Henderson holds firm at number two with Ghost while George Ezra’s Budapest has climbed two places to reach number three.

Ed Sheeran’s Sing is at number four and was the most streamed track of the week with 1.32m plays on audio streaming services. All 12 tracks from the standard version of his chart-topping second studio album, X, appear in the top 100.

His second album became the UK’s fastest selling album of 2014 so far last week, selling 182,000 copies during its first seven days of release. It has since gone on to sell an additional 93,000 in the last seven days, bringing its tally to 275,000.
