Calling all female singers, songwriters and instrumentalists aged between 16 and 25: apply to join Brighter Sound's free Both Sides Now music residency this summer.
The week-long programme takes place from 22 to 26 July in Leeds and is led by local singer-songwriter Bianca Gerald with support from composer and producer Christella Litras.
Over five days, participants will be able to experiment, improvise and collaborate with like-minded emerging artists to create new music at local space, Studio12.
The theme is What does it mean to be a female artist in 2019? and the residency will explore empowerment, artistic identity and authenticity for early-career female musicians.

Gerald said: ‘We are living in a beautiful, exciting and progressive time of female empowerment. A time where our voices can be heard over our aesthetic or the preconceived notions and characteristics imposed upon us.
‘With legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, India Arie and Jhené Aiko and writers such as Alice Walker and Maya Angelou as influences, I aim to create a space within the residency where we shed the pressures and materialistic aspects of society and begin to weave colours of a new world and a new future.’
Both Sides Now is run by Brighter Sound to address the gender imbalance in the music industry in the North of England.
