Tech giant Apple has announced the launch of iTunes Radio, a free internet radio service featuring more than 200 radio stations.

The new platform, which will be ad-supported and free for iPod and iPhone users, will be launched in the autumn and is set to compete with other streaming services such as Spotify and Last.fm.

According to Apple, iTunes Radio will offer users ‘access to stations inspired by the music you already listen to’ with music being tailored to that already played and downloaded via iTunes.

iTunes Match subscribers, who already pay a fee of $24.99 (£16) per year, will be able to listen ad-free.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president of Internet Software and Services, said: ‘iTunes Radio is an incredible way to listen to personalised radio stations which have been created just for you.

‘It’s the music you love most and the music you’re going to love and you can easily buy it from the iTunes Store with just one click.’

The launch of the new service was unveiled at Apple’s annual developers’ conference in San Fransisco.

News of the iTunes Radio follows months of speculation as the company recently negotiated deals with the likes of Warner Music and Sony.
