Annie Lennox, acclaimed singer songwriter and solo artist, is to be honoured with a Music Industry Trust (MITS) Award.

The songwriter will receive the honour in recognition of her work both as a musician and for raising awareness for HIV charities in Africa.

She will receive the honour at a gala dinner to be held in aid of Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust on 4 November in London.

Annie Lennox said: ‘I'm incredibly touched and honoured to be considered as a recipient of the 22nd MIT Award.

‘Music has given me a lifetime of experiences and opportunities that I never would have dreamed possible and I feel very privileged to have been able to become an artist and communicator, especially as a woman.’

David Munns OBE, chairman of the MITS Award committee, said: ‘[She is] one of Britain’s most successful songwriters, the recipient of eight BRIT Awards, four Ivor Awards and four Grammys and the most successful female British artist in UK music history with over 80m records sold worldwide: Annie Lennox we salute and celebrate you.’

Annie Lennox’s career began in 1971 when she attended the Royal Academy of Music aged 17. She went on to form the Eurythmics with Dave Stewart and sell more than 75m albums worldwide before embarking upon a successful solo career.

The MITS is now in its 22nd year and has raised over £4.3m for Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust.

Previous winners of the award include Gary Barlow, Jools Holland and Sir Tom Jones.
