American musician Amanda Palmer has written an open letter to Morrissey urging him to crowdsource funding for his next album.

The British singer songwriter said in a recent interview with Reactor 105, a Mexican radio station, that he has more than three albums worth of material ready to record, yet no means of releasing this new work.

In the letter, which was published by Salon, the former member of The Dresden Dolls called on Morrissey to use a Kickstarter-style campaign as a way of releasing his new music.

Palmer, who was the first musician to raise more than one million dollars via Kickstarter, said that a quick survey among her Twitter followers showed that more than 1,400 of them would be willing to pledge $5 towards the making of an album. It's an indication of the potential of the resource if Morrissey was to consider crowdsourcing.

In the letter Palmer said: ‘You’re actually Morrissey. You have some of the most fanatical fans in the world; caring and devoted people from countries far and wide who would be really, really happy to support you at levels far beyond $5 just to have the songs in their ears.

‘You’re possibly one of the best candidates on the planet to use crowdfunding, because of who you are and what you mean.’

Palmer used Kickstarter to raise $1.2m to pay for the release of her third album, Theatre is Evil.
