The song was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with a 77-piece orchestra last year and hit the top 10 in charts worldwide.

It will compete alongside Norah Jones’ Everybody Needs a Best Friend (from the film Ted), J Ralph’sBefore My Time (Chasing Ice) and Mychael Danna’s Pi’s Lullaby (Life of Pi).

The 75-strong long-list originally featured the likes of Karen O, Rick Ross, The Black Keys, John Legend and Mumford & Sons, none of whom made the final shortlist.

The Academy Awards ceremony takes place on 24 February.
