Adele has been named as the biggest selling artist of all time on online retailer Amazon, according to new figures.

The sales information, released to celebrate the website's 15th anniversary, shows Coldplay and the Beatles in second and third place behind the British singer songwriter.

Adele is the best seller across sales of CDs, vinyl, cassette and MP3 because of her albums 21 and 19 being the two top best selling full length releases.

Paul Firth, head of Music at Amazon.co.uk, said: ‘Adele’s achievement in securing both the best-selling artist title and the top two best-selling albums of the past 15 years on Amazon.co.uk is remarkable.

‘The fact that Rage Against the Machine’s Killing In The Name Of has pushed Adele into second place in the best-selling singles chart is indicative of how much the UK loves a good campaign and how the public love the underdog.’

He added: ‘The appearance of Gangnam Style at number three in the all-time singles chart perhaps shows a future in which the internet makes music tastes more international than ever before.’

Further figures from the company showed that One Direction's Midnight Memories was the fastest-selling album in Amazon’s history.
