Adele’s single Someone You Like beat Lady Gaga and Rihanna to the top of the singles chart yesterday, while Rolling In The Deep moved up from number five to four.
In the album chart, Adele’s sophomore longplayer 21 has held onto the top spot for the fourth week running, while her 2008 debut album 19 moved up from six to four.
In January 1964 The Beatles’ I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were at numbers two and five in the singles chart, while the albums With The Beatles and Please Please Me were at one and two respectively.
Meanwhile. Adele performed Someone Like You at the BRIT Awards last Tuesday, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd at London’s O2 Arena.
Several BRITs winners also saw a surge in record sales following the ceremony. Rihanna, who scooped the Best International Female award saw her new single S&M go straight in at number six.
UK rising star Tinie Tempah, who took home the British Breakthrough Act and Best Single accolades, saw his Eyes Wide Shut collaboration with boyband JLS peak at number eight in the singles chart.
Geoff Taylor, CEO of the BPI, said: 'This year's BRITs showed that Britain continues to shine brightly with new musical talent. Adele's breathtaking performance has deservedly taken her to number one, and all the winners and performers have seen a boost in sales.
'This is good news for the business, but also for good causes, as all proceeds from the BRITs performances go to charity for the first month.'
