Adele’s second album 21 has been the biggest seller in the US for the second consecutive year, new statistics have revealed.
The album sold 4.41 million copies in 2012 after shifting 5.82 million the previous year, Nielsen Soundscan’s figures showed.
It is the second year that Adele has crowned the list of top sellers, which is a first for any artist since Nielsen Soundscan began compiling its charts back in 1991.
US country singer Taylor Swift came second selling 3.11 million copies of her album Red.
British chart success in the US was confirmed by the stats with both Mumford & Sons and One Direction making up the rest of the top five.
The boy band achieved a double with 2011’s Up All Night selling 1.62 million units to take third while this year’s Take Me Home sold 1.34 million to take fifth.
Mumford & Sons were fourth in the chart after selling 1.62 million copies of Babel.
Adele’s top of the charts is yet another glittering achievement in a year full of them for the British singer songwriter.
She was voted top of six end-of-year categories for Billboard magazine including top album, top digital album and digital artist. Meanwhile 21 was top of US iTunes list of 2012’s best selling albums after achieving the same accolade back in 2011, again a first for the list.
